Late Monday, May 17, 2017, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the Toledo Village area in the north end of the county. The caller stated that he had discovered bomb-making materials at a relative’s lake house. Several officers from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the location. Federal officers contacted the Houston Police Department’s Bomb Squad who also responded to the location. After approximately 3 hours of investigation the Federal agents advised Sheriff Rowles that no federal law had been violated because nothing explosive had been constructed. The family agreed to release all the materials to the Houston Bomb Squad for training purposes.
Sheriff Rowles thanks Newton County residents for looking out for one another and watching the daily happenings around the county. He has been encouraged by the teamwork in the county since he took office at the beginning of this year.
